The Lions Club of Winnipeg’s rich history for community service started 90 years ago. In the early 1960s, Lions members recognized that many of our senior citizens were living in difficult circumstances, and that the dignity and respect they had earned over a lifetime was slipping away. This understanding and commitment to our elderly led to the construction of the first senior citizens residence, Lions Manor, designed to provide affordable and comfortable housing to seniors in need. Since then, the Lions commitment to seniors has grown to service over 1,200 citizens in our community.

The result was the vision, foresight, and determination of the Lions Club of Winnipeg first president, George Harvey, who recognized the need for seniors housing in downtown Winnipeg. Lions Manor officially opened in June 3, 1965. The original 191 suites provided independent, affordable housing for seniors with an emphasis on a community lifestyle.
