Lions Club of Winnipeg
The Lions Club of Winnipeg – the first Lions Club in Manitoba and the third in all of Canada – received its Charter from the International President of Lions Clubs on Saturday, November 26th, 1921. The Lions Club of Winnipeg Housing Centres’ Board of Directors is comprised of Lions Club of Winnipeg members.
Lions Manor was the result of the vision, foresight and determination of the Lions Club of Winnipeg Housing Centre’s first Resident, George Harvey, who recognized the need for seniors’ housing in downtown Winnipeg 38 years ago. Lions Manor officially opened June 3, 1965. The original 191 suites provided independent, affordable housing for seniors with an emphasis on a community lifestyle.
Today, Lions Housing Centres continues to provide a comfortable, home-like atmosphere and for the first time, a continuum of care for over 800 Residents - a testament to the determination, faith and energy of the Lions Club of Winnipeg.
For over 10 years the Housing Centres had pursued the addition of long term care, and with the official sod turning on January 13th, 1999, the dream came closer to reality. The official opening took place in May of 2000 and within a few weeks, became home to 116 Residents.
With Winnipeg’s senior population expected to exceed 120,000 within the next 15 years, Lions recognizes the daunting task of providing affordable housing options for future generations. From independent to supportive housing, and long term care, the Housing Centres is providing a supportive, caring environment for seniors of today and tomorrow.
In addition to housing options for seniors, Lions remains an active partner in the community, providing extended services through Adult Day Clubs, and quality child day care.
